Penny Cruz

Was Born in 1978 in the capital of Mexico, Mexico City which was once known as Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire which flourished between the 13th and the 16th century. Mexico, is globally known for its iconic art craft work, variety of foods, beautiful places and a rich cultural heritage. Penny is currently based in Mexico City.

Penny began her journey as an artist when she was 10 years old.  She became passionate about arts and began to develop her art skills from an early age. Her grandmother was a huge inspiration in her early life. She taught Penny an ancient technique called “Feathered Art”, passed down from generation to generation. This art goes back to the times of the first Mesoamerican civilizations. It is done by, creating paint from feathers and later on, during the colonization with the dry, dyed stem of a plant, added to beeswax which is then used to create paintings.

To this day, Penny continues to practice the techniques her grandmother taught her with great pride and has applied it to her own work of art. She now specializes in micro mosaic art techniques, without any formal education in art she is self-taught.

She won 2nd place on the National Mexican Cultural Heritage Art Contest in 2020. She crafted a beautiful mosaic of “Our Lady of Guadalupe”. It was displayed in the Museum of Art of the Mexican Presidential Home, as part of the exhibit of the winner pieces in the art contest, and now is part of the Gallery of the Mexican National Art Fund.

Now a days she is a self-made entrepreneur dedicated to the development of her artwork.  Her art pieces are exposed in some places across Mexico, United States as well as in Asia and Europe.

Artist Statement

When she was young, Penny had a huge inspiration in her early art life by her grandmother. Her grandmother taught Penny an ancient technique called “Feathered Art”, passed down from generation to generation. This art goes back to the times of the first Mesoamerican civilizations. It is done by, creating paint from feathers and later on, during the colonization with the dry, dyed stem of a plant, added to beeswax which is then used to create paintings.

When she was growing up her grandmother passed, causing Penny to fall into a deep emotional depression. During this time, she could only find comfort in her family and her art. To this day, Penny continues to practice the techniques her grandmother taught her with great pride and has applied it to her own work of art. She now specializes in micro mosaic art techniques. Although she specializes in different religious byzantine and orthodox scenes, as well as own creations.

Penny is really convinced “Your roots give strength and passion to your life”.

Every art piece is full of emotions, because for her each micro mosaic piece is like a puzzle in our life, every little piece belongs somewhere, every little piece is necessary and every single piece is the balance to create a master piece of life.

She believes the light of our ancestral roots present the strength we have in every moment we survive through the path, every insecurity we go through or every moment we feel confused when we do not know what to do.

Our roots are the exact tissue underneath our skin, that make us not to forget who we are and where we come from. We all come from an exceedingly difficult year 2020, so Penny wants to bring hope and show everyone our roots will guide us through the bloodiest wars and the painful fights until the end. Those roots will allow us to reborn from ashes to illuminate the entire sky like a sunrise with the brightness of our light.
